The
Reserve Academy starts the first week of January and runs six
months. Classes are Tuesday and Thursday nights, from 6:30 to
9:30 p.m., and a few Saturdays every month. The schedule is
written so as to accommodate working adults. Occasional
absences are acceptable, with an opportunity to make up a few
of the classes.
There is a mid-term and a
state administered final exam, each of which must be
passed.
The Academy includes training
in community policing, criminal law, communication,
self-defense, firearms, first aid, investigations, patrol
procedures, arrest procedures, handcuffing, emergency vehicle
driving, and much more.
Recruits
are instructed by experienced officers who are considered
experts in their field.
Recruits are given
opportunities to practice what they have learned. These
experiences often have surprises that allow students to gain
real world experience in a controlled setting.
Recruits practice "high
risk" procedures on volunteer actors, while being
observed by Instructors. The safety of everyone involved
is of the highest priority, thus all equipment is specially
prepared and safety checked in advance.
After successfully completing
the academy you are sworn in, given a commission, and are
ready to hit the road as a Clark County Reserve Deputy
